Cavitation & Light Lipo

which is better?

Ultrasonic cavitation and laser lipo are both treatments for spot reduction of fat. The mechanisms through which results are achieved are very different but the contouring results are normally visually similar. Neither treatment is "better" or "worse" than the other - they are just different. To decide which treatment is better for you, you need to assess your desired outcomes against the expected results. We will go into further detail to explain the differences between the two.

Light Lipo?

The treatments themselves are what is known as "hands-free" - meaning that as a client, you are set up by the beauty therapist and then left to relax with the paddles strapped to your body. Many clients say they are able to comfortably sleep during their session, and do not feel any pain. The laser generates heat and causes metabolism of fatty acids contained within the fat cells in the treatment area. The fat cells remain intact, but release large amounts of the content contained within. The fat cell membrane becomes porous and spongy during treatments, making it easy for the contents to escape. Treatments need to be spaced approximately 48 hours apart, with a minimum of 6 treatments being required. Because our fat cells remain intact and can still expand and contract with weight gain and loss, Laser Lipo is considered a semi-permanent treatment and may need to be repeated a few times each year to maintain the excellent results that can be achieved through your first course of therapy. Large amounts of fat can be targeted within one session, so results can be seen within a number of weeks.

Cavitation?

Ultrasonic Cavitation is a scientific term that describes the phenomenon that occurs during treatment with ultrasound. Ultrasound treatments for fat reduction are administered by a paramedical aesthetician (meaning that the practitioner does not need to be a doctor). In contrast to laser lipo, which is hands-free, ultrasound treatments are actively administered by your trained aesthetician. This gives them more control to target the chosen contours to correct any asymmetries, and to feather the edges of the treatment area to give a more natural result. While you can still choose to relax, unwind, close your eyes and maybe have a bit of a nap, your therapist will be with you for the whole treatment so you may wish to talk instead.

Cavitation refers to the scientific phenomenon that occurs in the fat cells. To break it down, sound = vibration. The ultrasound handpiece emits a specific frequency of vibration (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound) into the fat layer, that causes immense pressure to build up inside the fat cells. Because our fat cells are designed to expand and contract very slowly as we put on weight or lose weight, they cannot withstand the intense pressure and break apart, releasing the contents. In this instance, the individual fat cells are destroyed, and can no longer contain fat. Because our fat cells do not multiply, and our fat cell count remains relatively stable, this means that the treatment is permanent and will not need to be repeated once the desired contours are achieved. Any weight gain or loss in the future will be observed with respect to the new contoured body shape that has been achieved with treatments. Smaller amounts of fat loss are achieved with each individual treatment, as the fat cell membrane waste can put additional strain on the kidney, liver and lymphatic system. Treatments are normally limited to 10 minutes per segment, with a maximum of 4 segments treated per session. A 5-7 day gap is generally enforced to ensure adequate elimination of released fats, membrane, and toxins that may have been contained inside the fat cells.

So which is better? It's important to make decisions that suit you and your desired outcome. No one option is objectively better or worse than the other; what is relevant is your expectations and how well they will be met by your chosen option.

Light Lipo -$50 per session

Treatments need to be spaced approximately 48 hours apart, with a minimum of 6 treatments being required.

The Light Lipo emits low levels of laser energy, which creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, breaking down the stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol and releasing them through channels in the cell membranes. The fatty acids and glycerol are then transported around the body to the tissues that will use them during metabolism to create energy. This process of fatty acid release is a natural response of the body when the body needs to used stored energy reserves, thus Light Lipo is not creating any unnatural reaction in the body nor does it affect or damage any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. A period of exercise post treatment will ensure the complete metabolism and thus elimination from the body of the freed fatty acids.

One of the latest developments in the treatment of cellulite is ultrasound cavitation. Extremely effective, it can reduce* cellulite and fat on the body. This technique uses machines that are able to direct high energy waves. Once these waves hit the body, they create micro bubbles that are comprised of vapor. These bubbles occur within the fat tissue and among interstitial liquid. Called the cavitation effect, this technique causes the interstitial liquid to transition between several phases. It starts to expand and contract. Before long, fat cells implode and the water and fat within them is released into the body’s tissue. This liquid and fat is then absorbed and processed out of the body by the liver. Essentially, it causes fat to be consumed and removed by the body.

  •  Tightened skin and reduced cellulite (due to the production of new collagen and elastin fibers)

  •  Reduced circumference in the treated area (due to fat-cell release)

  •   An overall contoured appearance (due to a combination of the benefits listed above)

  •  Areas you can do are Hips, thighs or stomach.

Due to the release of thermal energy some clients may swell or see slight redness in the area. This is completely normal and can be treated by using lotions with aloe vera. We also recommend that our clients drink a lot of water to help metabolize the fat and ensure a successful procedure.

8 and 12 sessions are needed for optimum results. The exact number of treatments needed will vary due to factors such as age, weight, and the area being treated.
